| Bio: | this is the livejournal that i apparently am incapable of updating. if you are my friend, email me! we can talk. i'm not much of a blogger, and am much more interesting in real life than you may be able to tell by my lame posts on this journal. the deal with the username is this: i learned to speak yiddish in college, and have since become reasonably fluent in it. back when i was an intern at the national yiddish book center, the inside joke was that in order to grow up to become a famous yiddish writer, you need to have a pen name, as many of the great yiddish writers did. case in point: sholem aleichem (a contemporary of mark twain, who wrote the books that inspired fiddler on the roof) was born sholem rabinovitsh, but took the pen name "sholem aleichem" (which means "peace unto you" or, more accurately translated: "hi! great to see you!"). anyway, my name is abby and the joke was that my yiddish writer pen name would be "abi gezunt" which means "as long as you're healthy...." and apparently i felt that my future career as a yiddish writer was going to start on the livejournal, and that's the genesis of the username. now i half-assedly blog in english about knitting, which ain't great yiddish literature, but as they say, abi gezunt.... | |||||
